FUTURE IN OUR HANDS – ZAMBIA
In 2009 Maureen Hamiyanze received an AWARD (African Women in Agriculture, Research, and Development) fellowship. Through this fellowship she was charged with starting an NGO of her own. Maureen worked hard and incorporated the newest FIOH in Zambia, in Nov. 2011 with the assistance of FIOH-USA. She had previously started 3 small business projects of her own and a farm to help employ others and help support her family.
Future in Our Hands – Zambia (FIOH-Z) is now an NGO with the following vision:
FIOH- Zambia envisions communities that are economically and socially empowered, enjoying food security throughout the year, raising vibrant children enjoying uninterrupted education, accessing health care and living in decent housing with easy access to basic needs and contributing positively to their own development process.
The first project that FIOH-USA funded in Zambia was in 2012 to assist four schools in Choma that serve primarily orphans and vulnerable children (OVC) .
In three of the schools Maureen will be helping to start income generating projects to purchase supplies and pay and retain teachers. Currently only 3 in 10 teachers return year to year.
The fourth school will receive direct support due to its extreme need. At this school they have only one text book for every ten children.
