Maureen Hamiyanze

Having come from an impoverished background she knows the cruelty of poverty first hand. Her family survived from subsistence farming from whatever piece of land was given them by the local church. Mostly that piece of land would only produce enough food for a few months in a year and the rest of the months were basically chronic hunger (this pretty much the same for many rural people in Zambia that live on farming). This is where the seed of acquiring knowledge and skills in agriculture in order to help communities to produce more food was planted in her heart. Her education is a miracle from God. She stopped school several times during educational journey because her parents could not afford to take her to school. But they were determined they sold everything in order to give her and her elder brother an education in the hope that the yoke of poverty would be broken if children got educated as they would take on the responsibility of sending their siblings to school. God in his amazing grace would cause someone to see the potential in Maureen and move them to support her through school. And so through God’s mighty interventions, she completed High School. Because of her background, she resolved to study Agriculture and proceed to study at the Zambia College of Agriculture where she graduated from college with merit and a door was opened to study at the University of Wales where she graduated with a BSc (Honours) Degree in Agriculture. She has since worked in different capacities as a development worker with many reputable rural development organisations as a trainer, program manager and consultant. Her passion is in Agriculture and Leadership training, teaching and management of development programmes with hope of contributing to the elimination of poverty among vulnerable communities. It is this passion to make a difference that motivated her to start Future in Our Hands – Zambia.
