Healthy Living

Without Health, There Is No Future

Healthy living refers to projects that improve the general health of members of the community. FIOH-USA is committed to advancing the quality of life for our partner communities.  We work with our partners to develop self-sustaining, life-enhancing endeavors. Here are some examples of our healthy living projects:

Wells

Our origin was sparked by the unnecessary death of a sponsored student who contracted cholera from contaminated water. FIOH-USA builds and maintains borehole wells to ensure the community has access to safe, clean water. FIOH-USA has built more than 20 wells in response to the needs of the communities in East Africa, which aid in the elimination of cholera and other water-borne diseases.

Latrines

Many communities lack indoor plumbing and toilets in their homes and even in schools and businesses. FIOH-USA builds and maintains latrines for safe hygienic disposal of human waste

Stop The Spot/Girls Comfort Control

In 2008, when asked how FIOH-USA could help them, the girls at Kanyamedha Secondary School requested us to provide them with sanitary napkins. The students named the program Stop the Spot. This ongoing project empowers young women by providing the proper feminine hygiene products needed for them to be able to continue to attend school during their menstrual cycle. We’re proud to report that attendance rates have greatly improved since its inception, having raised the ratio of girls-to-boys at Kanymedha Mixed Secondary School to 50-50. We have expanded the Stop the Spot program to Usoma Primary School and Angelic Ark Center in Kisii, Kenya.

What Can Be Done?

With increased funding, FIOH-USA will be able to expand the Stop The Spot program to additional schools, build more wells and latrines, increasing the health of the community.
